hotel2

…so good to play the hotel cafe again.  to see john wells, who has mixed sound for me since i started performing and who still plugs everything in for me…  to see all my family and friends out there, and to see them seeing each other…  meeting new fans…  truly a pleasure.

this city is bananas though.  it’s only a few months since the last time i was here, and there are at least seven million more people and ten million less parking spaces.  people are fast, and people are angry…  but the weather, oh the weather – november is the most beautiful.  blue blue clear sky, shining mountains, bright sun, chilly evenings…  it has been stunning to be sure.  but i really don’t know you people do it.  i know i used to, but i just don’t remember…  i am longing for my bicycle but i wouldn’t be able to ride these hills and distances even if i had it.  i drive around and around to try to avoid valet parking and expensive lots…  it doesn’t work.  i know i’m complaining about the car culture here which is so cliche, but really, how on earth is this sustainable???  and what happens to this sprawling circus when we run out of resources???  people are working on it.  good people.  and all the hamsters drive priuses.

i love my friends.  i love my family.  i love these magical mountains and the smell of the air, the dirt and the jasmine.  i love sitting on couches at the chateau marmont and watching our native species in their natural habitat.  i love the sushi here.  i love the canyon country store and lily.  i love how well i know these windy roads and i love love love looking at the magnificent jewel box in the sky from mulholland drive.

i will always love LA.

-2…what an amazing night!  such an honor to play in that beautiful room, to be supported by such amazing musicians, to hear my friends hunter and nathaniel, lee, tate and matt play on either side of me…  so incredible to have a room filled with the most beautiful people and the gift of everyone’s presence and receptivity – i am so grateful, and i can’t wait to do it again!  by the way, the dress i was wearing was made by hand with love by my dear friend sarah bibb who’s store “folly” is here in portland on 16th and lovejoy…  go check it out!

i hope that everyone who purchased a cd is enjoying it, so much hard work when into making that record…  it will be available online in a couple of weeks now.

thank you thank you, i am so looking forward to playing in L.A. next month!

this is the place where i will feel unshackeled by the super-structures of social networking sites, i will imagine (and sometimes it will be true) that i am sitting by the fire on a pile of pillows spilling my thoughts out into the vast matrix of the unseen, to be processed by anyone who chooses to stop and focus here.

sometimes it will be very boring, like today: it is raining and i am going to spend the afternoon in a screenprinting shop on alberta street printing the jackets for the very-special first run of my cd “my pleasure.”  we will eat pizza and drink beer, even though i am trying not to eat pizza and drink beer.  i will be listening to fleetwood mac and steely dan.  actually not boring at all.  tonight i will go see my friends in pancake breakfast land stomp and hoot their little hearts out at the woods in sellwood.

life is good.

please come and see me perform like a joyous heart-achey monkey on wednesday at mississippi studios if you are here in portland.  i will give you a free sticker.

love,

rachel

ps.  lee made this website.  isn’t it rad?
